UNIFORMI FANTERIA

 

 

L'origine delle uniformi dell’esercito del Duca di Savoia è riconducibile a un regolamento, emanato nel 1670, che stabilì che dalla paga del soldato doveva essere trattenuta una certa quantità di denaro, custodita dai loro capitani, al fine di acquistare capi di abbigliamento (che erano ordinati al colonnello da parte del governo). I Colonnelli dovevano trovare un accordo con i commercianti per fornire le stoffe e confezionare i vestiti per le truppe. In questo modo veniva fornita un’uniforme uguale per tutti i soldati dello stesso reggimento, anche se di tanto in tanto alcuni colori potevano essere modificati, dato che la scelta del colore veniva lasciata principalmente alla libertà di gusto dei colonnelli. Il soldato di fanteria era vestito con un cappotto (juste-au-corp) di panno foderato con un tessuto in mezza lana, più o meno dello stesso stile di quella dell'esercito francese – per molti anni, infatti, anche quando scoppiò la guerra contro la Francia, la stoffa e i sarti erano generalmente di provenienza francese (le truppe ricevettero la veste solo alla fine del 17° secolo) – con un paio di calzoni che arrivavano al ginocchio e delle calze, le ghette (dopo 1697), scarpe, 2 camicie di lino bianche, una cravatta (rosso o bianco) e un cappello di feltro nero.

I bottoni - 3 dozzine per il juste-au-corp - erano generalmente di peltro. Il cappello era bordato con un gallone in lana/cotone che in un primo periodo non richiamava era necessariamente il colore dei bottoni. Tutte le buffetterie erano di pelle naturale. Le giberne erano di pelle di colore marrone, che a volte venivano annerite. I foderi della spada e della baionetta erano generalmente di pelle marrone. Dal 1685 i soldati furono dotati di baionette e mantennero anche la spada da fanteria con impugnatura in ottone. Le picche della fanteria vennero abolite prima della fine del secolo, considerata la scarsa comodità e l’inutile impiego net territorio piemontese, costellato di colline, montagne e terreno accidentato, ricco di canali, ruscelli e corsi d’acqua.

I Granatieri indossavano un berretto di lana e probabilmente verso la fine del 1690 il bordo venne circondato da una pelliccia. Erano armati con una sciabola, una baionetta, due pistole e un fucile. Gli Ufficiali delle compagnie di Granatieri o quelli di presidio avevano lo spuntone (spontone) - arma formata da un'asta con una punta in ferro inserita a un'estremità, adottata in sostituzione della picca - ma sul campo erano armati di moschetto.

Dal 1671 i soldati del reggimento Guardie indossavano un giustacorpo blu con paramani, calzoni e calze di colore rosso, con il cappello bordato di gallone in pizzo d'argento. Alcuni suppongono che nel 1670 le Guardie erano invece vestite con un giustacorpo grigio-bianco con paramani blu, nello stile delle Guardie Francesi del Re Luigi XIV (che tra l'altro fece adottare il giustacorpo blu per le sue guardie solo nel 1685). La veste, quando finalmente venne distribuita, era blu orlata con un gallone di pizzo bianco. I Sergenti erano vestiti con un panno di una qualità più fine e aveva paramani scarlatti e gallone in pizzo di argento invece che di cotone bianco.

Il Tamburo Maggiore, i tamburini e i pifferi di tutti i reggimenti nazionali, le Guardie incluse, erano vestiti con la livrea ducale che consisteva di un giustacorpo rosso, con paramani e fodera blu, calzoni e calze blu (in alcuni reggimenti indossavano calzoni e calze uguale ai soldati della loro unità). La bandoliera del tamburo era coperta da un panno blu o rosso, bordata con gallone bianco o argento e – al centro – ornata con una gallone dello stesso colore a “biscia” (così veniva chiamato per la forma sinuosa in cui veniva cucita). Lo stesso motivo a “biscia” ornava anche il giustacorpo alle cuciture, agli orli e ai lembi delle tasche. I tamburi erano generalmente di legno dipinti di blu o rosso con lo stemma del Duca o del Colonnello comandante del reggimento o, ancora, con piccole croci bianche sparse a intervalli regolari sulla cassa del tamburo (le cosiddette “braccia di Savoia”.

Gli Ufficiali erano vestiti con tessuti più fini e di qualità maggiore, portavano una fascia blu/azzurro (il colore ducale) intorno alla vita o, talvolta, in diagonale dalla spalla alla vita e fino a buona parte del 18° secolo erano spesso vestiti con colori diversi dai propri soldati (generalmente bianco, blu o rosso), anche se un ordinanza del 1685 imponeva di indossare le stesse uniformi/colori reggimentali dei propri uomini.

Tutti gli altri reggimenti nazionali dal 1671 erano vestiti con un giustacorpo di panno di colore grigio chiaro (bianco-grigio), con i colori del paramani, dei risvolti, ecc secondo la tabella riportata nel post n.3.

I bottoni erano di metallo bianco per i reggimenti Guardie, Piemonte, Aosta, Nizza, Croce Bianca, Saluzzo e Marina e di ottone per i reggimenti Savoia e Monferrato. Dal 1694 venne deciso che le calze dovevano essere dello stesso colore dei risvolti, mentre prima potevano essere indistintamente del colore reggimentale o grigio-bianco.

I Sergenti erano generalmente vestiti come i soldati con una qualità di panno migliore, anche se in taluni casi sembra che il loro abito potrebbe avere avuto i colori invertiti dai colori del resto della truppa, cioè poteva essere del colore reggimentale con paramani grigio-bianco. I Caporali si distinguevano da una spallina sulla spalla destra. In seguito venne adottato un gallone (in base ai colori dei bottoni) per orlare il cappello, i paramani e le tasche: in argento o d'oro per i sergenti e di lana bianca o gialla per i caporali. I Sergenti si distinguevano anche per l'uso dell’alabarda, chiamata anche "Sergentina". I Caporali utilizzavano il moschetto, come il resto della truppa.

Di alcuni reggimenti stranieri si conosco le uniformi mentre per molti altri rimangono, per tale periodo, sconosciuti i vari colori.

Tra quelli conosciuti abbiamo il reggimento bavarese di Steinau (poi di Prè o de Prez) che era vestito di blu con paramani, veste e calze di colore rosso; bottoni di metallo bianco e d'oro per gli ufficiali. Ufficiali e sergenti, così come i tamburini, erano vestiti con i colori invertiti, cioè abito rosso con risvolti blu. La cravatta dei soldati era rossa.

I reggimenti Brandenburger (Corneaud, Margraf Karl, Varenne e von Hutten) erano tutti vestiti con un giustacorpo blu con risvolti differenti da un reggimento all'altro.

Il reggimento di Varenne aveva paramani e risvolti gialli, veste e calzoni di pelle di bufalo beige, calze blu e bottoni bianchi. La cravatta era nera, il gallone del cappello era bianco, blu e giallo. Gli Ufficiali portavano un vestito giallo con le cuciture bordate di gallone oro, risvolti e paramani blu, cravatta bianca, cappello bordato di argento, spalline blu, calze bianche e calzoni di pelle di bufalo beige. I Musicisti indossava un abito giallo con risvolti blu, calze gialle, gallone sulle maniche blu-giallo.

Il reggimento Hutten aveva risvolti blu, fodera rossa, calze e cravatta di colore bianco, gallone del cappello bianco, asole dei bottoni gialle con una striscia centrale rossa, bottoni in metallo bianco. Gli Ufficiali avevano un vestito blu con risvolti rossi, risvolti, veste, pantaloni e calze riccamente orlate in oro. I musici avevano un abito blu orlato alle cuciture ed ai paramani di giallo-rosso.

Il reggimento fucilieri Auxman era vestito come i fucilieri nazionali, cioè con un giustacorpo grigio-bianco con polsini rossi.

Il reggimento Schulembourg era vestito di blu con fodera e paramani grigio-bianco e bottoni in metallo bianco. I calzoni erano molto probabilmente blu (grigio-bianco nel 1707) e calze grigio-bianco.

Il reggimento Reding, dal suo Capitolazione, era vestito con un giustacorpo blu e paramani rossi, probabilmente con calzoni e calze blu e bottoni in metallo bianco. E’ molto probabile che il reggimento Andorno, fosse vestito in modo simile.

I reggimenti protestanti e le compagnie di libera capitolazione erano generalmente vestite di grigio-bianco con paramani, risvolti, calzoni e calze dello stesso colore.

 

UNIFORMS OF  ARMY OF DUKE VITTORIO AMEDEO II (LEAGUE OF AUGSBURG)

INFANTRY UNIFORMS

The origin of the uniforms in the Duke of Savoy’s army is traced back to a regulation, issued in 1670, which stated that from the soldier's pay a certain amount of money had to be kept by their Captains in order to buy clothing (that was advanced to the Colonel by the Government). Colonels had to strike a contract with merchants to provide cloth and manufacture the dress for the troops. In this way a uniform dress for all the soldiers of a regiment was distributed, even if from time to time some colours would be changed and the choice of the colour was left mainly with the Colonels. The infantry soldier was dressed with a coat (juste-au-corp), lined with half-wool, much the same style as that of the French army - for many years, also when at war with France, cloth and tailors were generally French - (the troops received a vest only at the end of the 17th century), knee-breeches and stockings, gaiters (after 1697), shoes, 2 white linen shirts, a tie (red or white) and a black felt hat.

The buttons numbering 3-dozen for the juste-au-corp were generally pewter. At an early period the hat was laced in a colour not necessarily matching the buttons. All belts were natural leather. The cartridge boxes were of brown leather, sometimes

blackened. Sword and bayonet scabbard were generally brown leather. Since 1685 soldiers had been equipped with bayonets, but kept also an infantry sword with brass hilt. Pikes in the line infantry were discarded before the turn of the century.

Grenadiers wore a woollen cap; probably towards the end of the 1690’s the cap was surrounded by fur; they were armed with a sabre, a bayonet, two pistols and a musket. Officers of grenadier companies in garrison carried a spontoon, but in the field they had to carry muskets.

Since 1671 the privates of the regiment of the Guards wore a blue coat with red cuffs, red breeches and stockings; the hat was bordered in silver lace. Some suppose that in 1670 the Guards were instead dressed in grey-white with blue cuffs, in the style of the Gardes François of King Louis XIV (who incidentally adopted the blue coat for soldiers only in 1685). The vest, when eventually given, was blue, piped and braided with white lace. Sergeants were dressed with cloth of a finer quality, and had scarlet cuffs and silver lace instead of white cotton.

Drum major, drummers and fifers of all national regiments, the Guards included, were dressed in the ducal livery which was a red coat with blue cuffs and lining, blue breeches and stockings (in some regiments they wore breeches and stockings as the privates of their unit). The drum belt was covered with a blue or red cloth with white or silver lacing and trimming (a sort of "snake" as it was called) in the middle. The same lace was on the coat at the seams, the cuffs, pocket flaps. Drums were generally made of wood and painted in blue or red with the Duke's or the regiment's arms and small white crosses scattered at regular intervals on the drum (Savoy's arms).

Officers wore a blue sash (the ducal colour) around the waist or sometimes across the breast, and until well into the 18th century often were dressed in different colours to the soldiers of their regiments (generally white, blue or red), even though an order of 1685 stated that they should dress as the men.

All the other national regiments since 1671 were dressed in light grey (white-grey) cloth, with the [known] colours of the cuffs, linings etc. according to the poste number 3.

The buttons were white metal for the regiments of Guardie, Piemonte, Aosta, Nizza, Croce bianca, Saluzzo and la Marina and brass for the regiments of Savoia and Monferrato. Since 1694 it was decided that stockings should be of the colour of the facings, while before they were either that color or grey-white.

Sergeants were generally dressed as the soldiers with cloth of a finer quality; sometimes their vest could be the colour of the cuffs when the men wore it or grey-white. Corporals were distinguished by a lace hanging from the right shoulder. Later a silver or golden lace was put at the border of the hat and on the cuffs and pocket flaps for sergeants and a white or yellow woollen one for corporals.

Sergeants were also distinguished by the use of the halberd (called "Sergentina").

Of the foreign regiments we know the uniforms of some, while for many of the others they remain at this date generally unknown.

The Bavarian regiment of Steinau (later de Prè or de Prez) was dressed in blue with red cuffs, vest and stockings; buttons were white metal for the ranks and golden for officers. Officers and sergeants, as well as drummers, were dressed with reversed colours, i.e. red dress with blue facings. The necktie of the soldiers was red.

The Brandenburger regiments (Corneaud, Margraf Karl, Varenne and von Hutten) were all dressed in a blue coat with facings and linings different from one regiment to the other.

The regiment of Varenne had facings and lining in yellow, vest and breeches buff, blue stockings and white buttons. The necktie was black, the hat border white with a blue and yellow lace. Officers wore a yellow dress laced in gold, blue lining and facings; white neck tie, silver lace at the hat, blue shoulder knots, white stockings, buff breeches. Musicians wore a yellow dress with blue facings, yellow stockings, lace on sleeves blue-yellow.

The regiment of Hutten had blue facings, red lining, white stockings; white necktie, white hat border, button holes laced in yellow with a red central stripe, white metal buttons. Officers had a blue dress with red lining, facings, vest, breeches and stockings, richly laced in gold. Musicians had a blue dress laced yellow-red at the sleeves, on the seams and the cuffs. The Auxman regiment of Fusiliers was dressed as the national Fusiliers, that is with a grey-white coat with red cuffs. The Schulembourg regiment was dressed in blue with grey-white lining and cuffs and white metal buttons. Breeches were very likely blue (grey-white in 1707) and stockings grey-white.

The Reding regiment, by its Capitulation, was dressed with a red coat and blue cuffs, probably with blue breeches and stockings and white metal buttons. It is very likely that the Andorno regiment, as it was formerly known, was dressed in a similar manner.

The Protestants regiments and free companies were generally dressed in grey-white with cuffs, lining, breeches and stockings of the same colour.
